Mary Poppendieck describes the land rush era of the Internet: “At high
noon the cavalry bugles sounded, and gunshots were fired. Within
hours, all the choice land was gone. Land went to those with a fast
horse and a plan during those first few hours. But success came only to
those with a season’s worth of provisions and the ability to farm.”
On July 1 1, Poppendieck will present the 5 p.m. pre-meeting seminar,
“Internet Land Rush: Lessons Learned from Dot-Coms.”
She compares
two eras, both focusing on speedily staking a claim. She says, “It’s not
about profits or products; it’s about partnerships and eyeballs. Everyone
wants a piece of the action, from the investors driving up stock prices to
the top-notch people deserting traditional jobs for dot-coms. No one
wants to be left behind.”
Poppendieck will advise those who wish to start an e-something
company, answering such questions as: Should you abandon all caution
and go as fast as you can to get on the Web? That’s what the dot-coms
seem to be doing, and it’s working for them, isn’t it? Can you afford to
take time when your competition is seizing the land at breakneck
speed?
The seminar examines the myths and realities of the dot-coms, giving
entrepreneurs insights into what’s important and what isn’t in order to
achieve both the speed and staying power needed for ultimate e-
business success.
