Spurning Spam with Mail i Want.com
September 5, 2000

Todd Brown’s Mail i Want.comhas introduced a new business
paradigm into e-commerce. One-to-one permission marketing or opt-in
email allows companies to do a direct e-mail campaign for a fraction of the
cost of traditional direct mail marketing. Brown calls his tool “a killer
application” because it moves companies into Internet direct marketing by
using a web-based “Email List Signup Page.”Companies are able to stop
the practice of spamming (submitting junk e-mail to masses of people who
may not be interested.)Clients of Mail i Want .com expand their e-profit
margins by selectively finding and keeping customers.

On Tuesday, September 5th, Todd Brown will tell his
remarkable story in a presentation titled:

“Mail i Want .com: A Not-By-the Textbook Success.”

Not only has Brown created a success by not following the standard
entrepreneurial journey, but his Duluth-based startup is located in the Soft
Center (a.k.a. Duluth Technology Village). His venture is proof that
technology is alive and well outside of the Twin Cities.

Mail i Want .com is garnering some big name clients including the 35,000-
member National Restaurant Association. By signing up with Mail i
Want.com, the association dropped an annual $1 million expenditure for a
direct mailing campaign. They are already getting a better return for their
efforts.

“I’ve been a salesman all my life,” says Brown who held senior
management positions with Best Buy Company, CustomerLink, Penn &
Schoen, 50 Below Sales & Marketing and Saturn Systems. His Fortune
100 experiences include international marketing research projects with
AT&T, Texaco Oil Corporation and Proctor & Gamble.

“Services To Attract People and Sales To Your Web Site”

Back by popular demand, Mary Poppendieck will conduct a Sept. 5 pre-
meeting seminar, “Services To Attract People and Sales To Your Web Site”
at 5 p.m. As Poppendieck will reveal, if you want to give your web site a
professional feel fast, you can add services that are already available
including:

Conducting Surveys
Adding Maps
Personalization (Including Collaborative Filtering)
Continually Updating Content

In July, Poppendieck presented a crowd-pleasing MEI seminar, “Internet
Land Rush: Lessons Learned from Dot-Coms.” In that session, she
compared two eras, both focusing on speedily staking a claim. She
advised those who wish to start an e-something company to answer such
questions as: Should you abandon all caution and go as fast as you can to
get on the Web? Can you afford to take time when your competition is
seizing the land at breakneck speed? And, what do you do once you get
there?

Poppendieck has been in the Information Technology industry for twenty-
five years. She has partnered with start-up companies, negotiating and
funding multi-million dollar equity investments. Today she runs her own
consulting company, Poppendieck.LLC. The seasoned leader in
operations and new product development holds two patents and has
published several technical papers. A teacher and lecturer as well as a
manager, she specializes in workshops on e-Business Project Leadership,
Object-Oriented Project Management, Re-usable Software Components,
and Time-Driven Software Development.

In addition to MEI, Mary has spoken on Software Project Management at
the Twin Cities Java User’s Group and will deliver papers at the PMI 2000
Symposium in September, at Software Development East in November and
for Project World in December.

Travels With An Entrenaut - August 1

Paul Crawford’s August 1 presentation, “E-ntrepreneurship.com” began
with the statement, “ I am a consummate entrepreneur.”Proof of that
statement can be found in his rise from bankruptcy to his latest venture,
Entrenaut, Inc., an incubator for Internet ventures such as Chef In A Box,
Jcare and OfficeCause.com.

With a background as a venture capitalist and vast experience with start-
ups, Crawford currently explores the newest entrepreneurial frontier, the
World Wide Web. He calls the Internet “the greatest wealth builder”
because there is no charge for spectrum and unlike brick and mortar
businesses, it requires modest capital and a quick launch. Crawford said,
“The Internet creates a whole new way to look at enterprises. It provides a
migration from the tangible to intangibles.”Among the intangibles are
knowledge, services, information, software and entertainment.

One of Crawford’s Internet successes is Commission Junction that he co-
founded with Lex Sisney. Commission Junction manages affiliate
advertising on the Web and just closed a $40 million private equity round.
Crawford provided a lively description of the creation, merger and launch of
this venture that is valued at $100 million today.

Revealing that he has “a blockbuster deal in progress,” Crawford proved to
be the epitome of his company’s name, navigating entrepreneurial waters
with both confidence and moxie.
